One of the major attractions of the 2013 UABB(SZ), is the creative and dramatic transformation of the old industrial buildings in Shekou, Shenzhen. The exhibition in the Border Warehouse, presented by Curators and Academic Directors Li Xiangning and Jeffrey Johnson, consists of a five-part exhibition.

The exhibition will document critical themes pertaining to urban borders, including an analysis of the historical evolution of borders, and an exploration of theoretical interpretations by contemporary practitioners. World-renowned architects and designers will offer their visions for urban boundaries in the section entitled “Crossing Border Case Studies,” while a more psychological and cultural paradigm is unpacked in the section called “Exploring the Social Boundary.”

The post-industrial site of the biennale provides the perfect context for this exhibition. As China’s economy and its industrial production evolve, the legacy of its industrial architecture and its relationship to the city will become ever more important. How will these architectures be adapted into the future city as both a productive site for innovation and as a reminder of its recent past?
