Matthias Sauerbruch, Louisa Hutton – Wysiwyg

Lecture date: 1999-11-18

Sauerbruch hutton architects established their reputation with two major commissions in Berlin: the GSW Headquarters reflects their desire to unite principles of sustainability with the creation of sensuous spaces at every scale while the Photonic Centre displays their idiosyncratic treatment of space and material, demonstrating their conviction that rational structure and economical design can be combined with highly individual spatial solutions.

Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton both studied and taught at the AA in the 1980s before establishing their practice in 1989.

The AA exhibition and accompanying illustrated book WYSIWYG presents key projects that document their work on large urban competitions, their investigations into environments that are both ecologically and sensually sustainable in the post-industrial city, and their production of smaller buildings which provide a more tangible investigation of built space.
