Hymens, Passports and Other Counterfeits, feminist architecture collaborative

Hymens, Passports and Other Counterfeits
MIT Architecture | Spring 2020 Lecture Series

6:00 PM, Room 7-429/Long Lounge

feminist architecture collaborative is interested in designed ways of being: a woman, a citizen, a patient, a pile of compost. They approach these states as unstable constitutions, taking inventory of the matter and media that condition life under the law, capital, and a protracted hetero-patriarchy. What are the interceding artifacts, devices, and scripts that allow for survival under—and subversion of—such truly busted circumstances? Can we configure other realities from this mess with sharper critique and greater care?

f-architecture has sought something truer in fakeness, indulging in its delights (eyelash extensions, fake IDs and fan-fic) while also demanding closer scrutiny of the definitive measures that reify more powerful myths (the nation and how we belong to it, for instance). Self-authorizing identity documents, virginity simulations and reconstructions of the clinic interior are among the objects of f-architecture’s practice in reproduction. This talk will illuminate several recent projects that center embodied experience and
demonstrate ways of working through feminist critique.

feminist architecture collaborative (f-architecture) is a three-woman* architectural research enterprise aimed at disentangling the contemporary spatial politics of bodies, intimately and globally. Their projects traverse theoretical and material registers to locate new forms of architectural work through critical relationships with collaborators across continents and an expanding definition of Designer. They are winners of the 2019 Architectural League Prize. Their research-based exhibition Como-Clinical Interiors of Beirut , originally installed at VI PER Gallery in Prague, has been presented by the Architectural League of New York, and at the NTU Institute of Science and Technology for Humanity in
Singapore, where they are shortlisted for the 2019 Global Digital Art Prize. In January 2020, they were Artists-in-Residence at The Lab at Darat al Funun in Amman, Jordan, during which time they produced the exhibition Paper Machine. Their writing and work has appeared in Harvard Design Magazine, e-flux architecture, Ed, The Funambulist, PIN-UP and Real Review, and at institutions including Morgan Library and Museum, Studio-X Amman, Universität der Künste Berlin, the New School, and UN-Habitat. f-architecture is a former member of the GSAPP Incubator @ NEW INC, the incubator initiative of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

*Virginia Black, Gabrielle Printz, and Rosana Elkhatib co-founded f-architecture in 2016 as their shared alias for architectural work and criticism. They maintain their wily practice and their deep friendship in Brooklyn, New York.
