100 Day Studio: Penelope Curtis – 'Art on Display 1949-69'

Day 67 of the 100 Day Studio: Penelope Curtis is the director of Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Museum and former director of Tate Britain from 2010 to 2015. She discusses ‘Art on Display 1949-69’, which she curated alongside Dirk van den Heuvel in 2019. The exhibition investigated the relation between art, architecture and public by focusing on art exhibitions designed by architects, reconstructing six iconic exhibition designs by the Smithsons, Aldo van Eyck, Lina Bo Bardi, Carlo Scarpa and Franco Albini. She explores how in the postwar period, the small scale and interior qualities of museum contexts provided ample possibilities for architectural experimentation.
