Why Words Matter | MoMA R&D Salon 25



Can words ever be neutral? How do the words we use reflect, affect and infect our reality? What about words we choose to omit? Join us for a conversation about why words matter in this forthcoming MoMA R&D Salon hosted by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Architecture & Design at MoMA.

With presentations by (in alphabetical order):

Fred Benenson – Kickstarter Fellow and author of Emoji Dick, an emoji translation of Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick, which later became the first emoji book acquired by The Library of Congress;

Isha Datar – Pioneer in the field of cellular agriculture, CEO of New Harvest and MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow;

Jenna Freedman – Academic librarian and author whose research interest focuses on the intersections of power and library systems and structures;

Lena Herzog – Documentary, fine art photographer and director of Last Whispers, a project about the mass extinction of languages.

The presentations will be accompanied by the screening of a series of 1-minute videos cut specifically for Salon 25 by – in alphabetical order – Sara Bodinson, Karthik Dinakar, Mark Fettes, Anne F. Garréta, Janice Kamrin, Shigetaka Kurita, Emma Ramadan and Romon K Yang (aka Rostarr).
