Calvert 22 Foundation is a London-based initiative nurturing and celebrating contemporary culture of the ‘New East’ (the Balkans, Russia and Central Asia). Its latest exhibition, The Future is Certain; It’s The Past Which is Unpredictable (a reference to an old Soviet saying), sees the work of nine artists and collectives explore how history can both be rewritten and imprint itself on the future. Here, Lithuanian artist Emilija Škarnulytė’s film Sirenomelia—named after a rare congenital deformity called Mermaid Syndrome— sees a mermaid explore a decommissioned NATO base in Arctic Norway.
