URBANISM AFTER DATA: REPOSITIONING DATA// 04.07.23

Urbanism after Data is part of a series of conversations organized by Assistant Professor of Architecture and Urban + Regional Planning, Ali Fard and hosted by the School of Architecture’s Urban Design Program, that aims to engage with the aftermath of data more critically as it profoundly infiltrates and alters contemporary urban practices. How do the uneven dynamics of data, with all their biases and discrepancies, inform contemporary urban practices? What alternative practices and media have emerged in response to the dominance of data in design?
How do we rethink the responsibility of design in relationship to the emerging agencies, latent landscapes, and new practices that have developed in the wake of data?
Urbanism after Data will bring together scholars and practitioners to respond to the urgent need to recalibrate our relationship to data and its socio-spatial imprints.

The first of three videos for the symposium will begin with guest introductions and context by Ali Fard. The first panel titled, “Repositioning Data” kicks off with Dietmar Offenhuber, Associate Professor and Chair of Art + Design at Northeastern University, with a dual appointment in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs.

Followed by Orit Halpern, Professor and Chair of Digital Cultures and Societal Change at Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden).

Finally, the panel ends with Matthew Seibert (UVA) followed by a table talk moderated by Shiqiao Li.
