Ed Atkins in conversation with Tom McCarthy
Ed Atkins makes videos, writes and draws, developing a complex and deeply figured discourse around definition, wherein the impossibilities for sufficient representations of the physical, specifically corporeal world – from computer generated imagery to bathetic poetry – are hysterically rehearsed. Recent solo exhibitions include The Serpentine Gallery, London; The Kitchen, New York; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; SMK Copenhagen; MMK Frankfurt; The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Castello di Rivoli, Turin; MoMA PS1, New York. Forthcoming projects include the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, and The Park Avenue Armory, NYC. A collection of Atkins’ writing, ‘A Primer for Cadavers’, was recently published by Fitzcarraldo Editions, and a new eponymously titled monograph from Skira will be published in the UK in September.
Tom McCarthy is known in the art world as general secretary of the International Necro-nautical Society. He is well known as a novelist – Remainder, Satin Island, Men in Space and a collection of superb essays, Typewriters, Bombs and Jellyfish.
