Thursday Night: Paolo Cirio on Surveilling Surveillers

Since the leaks of Edward Snowden revealed how everybody and everything is continuously monitored and how data are mined, stored, and analysed, we are increasingly aware of the surveilled environments in which we operate. And yet the tools and skills to reverse the process are less widely known. How to surveil the surveillers? In the Reading Room artist Paolo Cirio will show how agency can be reclaimed in the face of contemporary security systems.

Thursday Night at Het Nieuwe Instituut is a weekly programme of lectures, screenings and discussions on the future of architecture, design and e-culture. One week it’s a lecture, the next a quick-fire panel with surprising guests. In the intimate setting of the Reading Room we take the time to reflect on a single object or design.
