Thomas Demand and Sylvia Lavin discuss his 2008 project Black Label, based on a bar in Kitakyushu, Japan, Nagelhaus–a collaboration with the architecture firm Caruso St. John attempted to intervene in the degraded Escher-Wyss-Platz underneath an overpass in Zurich, his 2012 project The Dallies, in which Demand rented all the rooms on a floor of Harry Seidler’s Commercial Traveler’s Association building in Sydney, restored/renovated them, and installed a photograph in each room to reflect on the view. They concluded with the 2011 project Model Studies, in which Demand photographed models by John Lautner he discovered in a Getty Research Institute warehouse.
