Serpentine Pavilion 2022: Black Chapel by Theaster Gates

Artist Theaster Gates, who designed the 2022 Serpentine Pavilion, explains the role of architecture in his artistic practice.

Chicago-based Gates is the first solo artist to be commissioned to design the Pavilion. Black Chapel, unveiled earlier this summer, draws inspiration from many of the architectural typologies that ground the artist’s practice.

Gates explained he sees an affinity between the disciplines of art and architecture, but doesn’t refer to himself as an architect. “I’ve always had this belief that art and architecture were just two peas in a pod, that there are moments when great art requires that you imagine new things in space that require a certain amount of poetry in order to manifest them,” Gates says. “Architecture does the same.”

The Pavilion is free to visit and open until 16 Oct 2022.
