Roemer van Toorn – The Society of the And

Lecture date: 1999-03-16

Roemer van Toorn discusses the spatial development of the ‘second modernity’, arguing that we live and work within the ‘Society of the And’ but have yet to understand it. To do this we must first learn to look at it. In a discussion of ‘And’ concepts Van Toorn explains the new attitudes of architecture operating within this second modernity and proposes alternatives to the fresh conservatism it engenders.

Roemer van Torn is an architect, critic, photographer and curator. He is head of the PhD program Rewriting the (European) City and head of the History & Theory program in the Postgraduate Laboratory of Architecture at the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam.

NB: Difficult to hear questions from the audience during Q & A.
