René Magritte | Conservation of “The False Mirror”

MoMA curator, Anne Umland, and conservator, Michael Duffy, study René Magritte’s “The False Mirror,” in advance of the exhibition, “Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938.” Varnish is removed to reveal a soft and deep black. X-ray images confirm Magritte’s use of zinc and lead paints to emphasize white in two different ways.
