RACIAL JUSTICE IN URBAN PLANNING: Reparative Planning In Charlottesville// 11.02.2020

Minneapolis recently adopted a forward-thinking, comprehensive plan with reparative and restorative planning practices for racial equity. Racial inequity and systematic racism in the U.S. have become topics of increasingly widespread conversation in the wake of George Floyd’s death. As part of the changes resulting from this movement, it is crucial that we address reparative planning, and prepare future and current planners to implement reparative, equitable planning strategies. Questions to consider for this discussion panel include:

What specific practices is Minneapolis using, and how could we actively integrate racial equity into Charlottesville’s planning? Through zoning, community engagement, housing, and developments, etc.?
What should (and shouldn’t) a new plan for Charlottesville include?
What would a new plan look like? How would it change the city?
How does white affluence contribute to racial inequity in Charlottesville’s planning today?
