Rachel Bowlby discusses the ways in which consumers and consumerism have been represented in psychological and cultural criticism. Looking at essays by the poet, Randall Jarrell, including A Sad Heart at the Supermarket, she focuses in particular on the post-war critique of consumer society.

Rachel Bowlby is the author of several books on the history of consumer culture including ‘Just Looking’ and ‘Shopping with Freud’.
