Douglas Burnham / Envelope AD: Proxy San Francisco
Douglas Burnham is an architect and entrepreneur, designing buildings, environments and strategic solutions for individuals and communities. A practicing architect for over 25 years, he founded Envelope AD in 2002 to create a collaborative setting for the production of meaningful works of architecture, design and public space. Douglas’s pioneering work applying
interim activations as a means of community engagement has earned him widespread recognition. In 2010, Burnham initiated PROXY, a temporary open space activating two city-owned vacant parcels in the heart of San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. A placeholder for more permanent development, PROXY employs a nimble model for development—a flexible
urbanism—for the world’s rapidly changing cities.
