Marc Newson started experimenting with furniture design while studying jewellery and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts. From 1987 to 1991 he lived and worked in Tokyo where his designs were manufactured by Teruo Kurosaki’s company Idee. Such pieces as the Orgone Lounge, Black Hole Table and Felt Chair were widely exhibited in Asia and Europe.
Marc Newson set up a studio in Paris in 1991, winning commissions from prestigious manufacturers including Flos for lighting, Cappellini and Moroso for furniture. During the mid-1990s he also designed a series of restaurants in London, Manchester and Cologne, as well as the interior of a Tokyo recording studio and a retail system for the W.&L.T. street wear label. In 1997 he moved to London and set up Marc Newson Ltd to tackle a wider range of more ambitious industrial projects, including designing mass production glassware for littala and kitchen and bathroom accessories for Alessi. He also designed a bicycle, a concept car, and the interior and livery of a long-range private jet.
