Kisho Kurokawa – Metabolism + Recent Work

Lecture date: 2001-10-09

One of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary architects, Kisho Kurokawa talks about his architectural philosophy and recent work. Kurokawa argues that there has been a movement away from an architectural culture based on the Modernist’s commitment to the machine to a new epoch that he calls the ‘Age of Life’. Recent projects include proposals for eco-media cities in Astan, Kazakhstan, and the Riverside Area in Guangzhau, China.

Kurokawa’s philosophy of symbiosis established him as a key architectural theorist. As early as 1959 he put forward the idea of Metabolism, which envisaged cities and architecture as organisms capable of growth and change.
