How does your body react to art? You might have more control over the experience than you think. Watch a three-minute guided exercise recited by Emily Price, therapist specializing in the treatment of trauma and anxiety, and brought to life by animator Gaia Alari. “We all have an innate capacity to heal,” says Price. “I’m just providing a person with context or space while they learn to help themself.”

One of the strategies Price cultivates in her patients is “somatic experiencing,” a form of therapy focused on addressing the body’s response to different stimuli. “We can experience symptoms based on our thoughts, our emotions, our sensations, our behaviors. But we can also experience symptoms that are stuck in the body,” she explains. When these symptoms arise—spells of dizziness, pounding heartbeats, a stomach in knots—no matter how uncomfortable, it’s important to feel them. Different situations can bring about these bodily reactions, including experiencing art.
