Historic Preservation Podcast #21: Laurajane Smith on Weaponized Nostalgia

Jorge Otero-Pailos, director of GSAPPā€™s Historic Preservation Program, speaks with Laurajane Smith in advance of her Spring 2020 lecture at the school. Laurajane Smith is professor and director of the Centre of Heritage and Museum Studies, Research School of Humanities and the Arts, at the Australian National University. She founded the Association of Critical Heritage Studies, and has been editor of the International Journal of Heritage Studies since 2009.

They discuss Smithā€™s research around cultural heritage and the emotions of nostalgia, delving into ways that particular forms of emotion have been taken up and weaponized by right wing populist movements.
