Will Raynolds, faculty in GSAPP’s Historic Preservation Program, speaks with Doron Bauer in advance of his Fall 2019 lecture at the school. Bauer is an author and assistant professor of medieval and Islamic art history at Florida State University.
During the conversation, Bauer traces the idea of restoration back to medieval Iberia, where the Islamic invasion of 711 and the ensuing elimination of the Visigothic Kingdom led to the formation of an ideology of restoration (commonly known today as the Reconquista) by concocting a precocious form of nationalism.
In the process, Bauer draws attention to the multitude of ways that heritage is continually incorporated into society. He stresses the importance of examining attitudes towards cultural heritage and the practice of preservation so that we can truly understand what informs our choices.
