Jorge Otero-Pailos, director of GSAPP’s Historic Preservation Program, speaks with British cultural historian Robert Hewison in advance of his Spring 2019 lecture at the school. They discuss Hewison’s lifelong study of John Ruskin and the importance of protecting history from heritage. Hewison also introduces the concept of Creative Industries in Europe, tracing the development of this notion and examining false perceptions of how the creative economy operates today.
“During this period, roughly 1997-2014, there was a huge investment in the arts and creativity in general. I was looking at the way in which governments tried to capture culture and then use it for instrumental purposes….you don’t build an art gallery because you believe in art, you build it because you believe in tourism and cultural consumption. And of course it was during this period the term “the creative industry” was invented.” – Robert Hewison
