Gary Coates, Susanne Siepl-Coates – The Sustainable Architecture of Erik Asmussen

Lecture date: 1999-10-18

Erik Asmussen practiced architecture in Sweden from 1939 until his death in 1998. His buildings give a new form to the architectural impulses of Rudolf Steiner and are characterized by an organically expressive language that offers a significant alternative to the narrow technological functionalism of the Modern Movement. This lecture focuses on the ideas underlying Asmussen’s designs for the anthroposophical community near Järna, Sweden, in which he lived and worked, and which is widely regarded as a model example of a humanly scaled and ecologically sustainable community.

Gary J Coates is Professor of Architecture at Kansas State University and the author of Erik Asmussen, Architect.

Susanne Siepl-Coates is an Associate Professor at Kansas State University and prepared more than sixty original pen and ink drawings for Erik Asmussen, Architect.
