Participation has become a usual strategy in contemporary art and urban planning, with the objective of engaging the visitor or citizen directly in the process. SUPERFLEX has twisted and expanded this concept, with the intention of exploring unexpected and intriguing possibilities with the objective to feed ownership and empowerment with and for the user. Extreme participation aims to amplify the voice and actions of the user, sometimes with an ironic sense of exaggeration which can reach the absurd. Projects are developed from a small seed, personal stories or experience which become the driving force of the project. This notion was used, for instance, in Superkilen, the bank, Alice, Power Toilets or One Two Three Swing!. Extreme participation is a concept which mutates in each project and tool, enriching its language and implications.
SUPERFLEX was founded in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Bjørnstjerne Christiansen and Rasmus Nielsen. Through a complex and diverse practice, SUPERFLEX challenges the role of the artist today and explores the nature of globalisation and systems of power. Describing their work as tools, multiple areas of application or use are implied. SUPERFLEX’ practice is, as the name suggest, not bound to any form or context.
