David Ward – Invisible Cities

Lecture date: 1998-03-07

David Ward presents recent work, touching upon various watery, woodland, and aerial themes while attempting to analyse the predicament of the contemporary artist in relation to various institutions. Works discussed include those produced during residencies at King’s College, Cambridge and Harvard University – including ‘Canopy’, a sound piece for Harvard Yard. After recording Harvard students and staff reading sections from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities alongside other individually selected stories about place, Ward placed thirty audio recordings in the branches of the ancient elms around the Yard. Ward also talks about work that resulted from an extended journey along the Orinoco river in South America.

An artist, performer, writer, and curator, David Ward’s work is in many national collections. Most widely known for his photographic and light works of the 1980s and for his more recent architecturally-related works, he has exhibited and performed widely.
