Christopher Bardt – Sunworks

Lecture date: 1996-01-29

Christopher Bardt describes the genesis of an experimental structure that was built in the summer of 1994 in Roger Williams Park, Providence, Rhode Island. The work was undertaken as an attempt to investigate the organic fluidity of the suns movement and its architectural consequences. The project evolved from a small structure consisting of a chamber with apertures used to develop ideas for a time piece – the principle for which rested on the construction of a volume that would throw a beam of light within its shadow to mark time – rather than casting a shadow, as in a sundial. This beam of light would then be transmitted via apertures through the volume.

Christopher Bardt is an architect and Assistant Professor of Architecture at Rhode Island School of Design.
