Today, MoMA celebrates James Baldwin’s centennial. On November 3, 1968, James Baldwin sat on the MoMA panel “A Literary Evening in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” seven months after the assassination of Dr. King. Baldwin gave a striking proclamation about the role of the artist in times of despair as he reflected on the responsibility to carry on Dr. King’s legacy.
