Building Stories – The Awards Talks: Tintagel Castle Footbridge

In this video, special guests William Matthews (William Matthews Associates) and Nichola Tasker (English Heritage) bring the story of this 2021 Stirling-shortlisted, RIBA South West and National Award-winning project to life – part of a series celebrating RIBA award-winning buildings.

This is a recording of an in-person event that took place on 17 May 2022.

Each week architects reveal what it takes to design and deliver an inspiring and impactful building, followed by a live interactive Q&A session. The event is hosted by former RIBA President Ben Derbyshire (HTA Design).
Designed by William Matthews (WMA) and Ney & Partners engineers, the 68 metre bridge is one of the most ambitious and complicated heritage projects seen in the UK in recent years.

With its unusual surface of 40,000 locally sourced slate tiles, contemporary visitors can retrace the steps of predecessors, entering the 13th Century castle over a spectacular rocky chasm, heading into the grand hall on the island side.
