Building Stories – The Awards Talks: The Water Tower

In this video, special guests Mike Tonkin (Tonkin Liu) and structural engineer Mervyn Rodrigues (Rodrigues Associates) are joined by Dennis Pedersen to tell the unique story behind the 2021 Stephen Lawrence Prize-winning project, The Water Tower.

This is a recording of a livestream event that took place on 22 March 2022.

Each week architects reveal what it takes to design and deliver an inspiring and impactful building, followed by a live interactive Q&A session. The events is hosted by a member of the RIBA’s Awards Group who visited the buildings, capitalising on their first-hand knowledge and appreciation of the project.

The Water Tower, Tonkin Liu – standing tall with nowhere to hide, the structure is both brave and frugal, a gentle giant. This conversion of a disused 1950s water tower into a private home is a fantastic example of adaptation and reuse. Shortlisted for the 2021 RIBA House of the Year, it won a RIBA National and RIBA East Award.
