Professor Donald Bates is the Chair of Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. He is a Founder and Director of LAB Architecture Studio, an architectural and urban design practice based in Melbourne, with offices in Shanghai, London, Delhi and Dubai. Professor Bates is a member of the Victorian Design Review Panel and is a juror at the forthcoming World Architecture Festival in Singapore. He has taught at the Architectural Association in London, the Cooper Union in NYC and lectured in more than 170 schools and institutions across the world.

LAB Architecture Studio are the designers, in association with Bates Smart, of Melbourne’s Federation Square, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. LAB has also completed projects in the UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Singapore and China. In China, LAB has produced numerous high-rise office and residential towers and retail developments, along with a number of large-scale master plans, including work on the new town of Xitaihu, and on Nanjing’s Xiaguan. LAB is a founding member of AUS — Australian Urban Systems — an industry cluster group, support by the Department of Business and Innovation, providing expertise and consultancy services for sustainable and liveable urbanism.
