A Simple Extension Brings a Sense of Calmness to This Inner-Melbourne Terrace House

The owners engaged with architecture practice Eldridge Anderson as their North Melbourne terrace home was in bad shape. It was time to take advantage of their property and location. The owners had a simple brief; they wanted to soak in as much sun as possible and have the ability to open the home up to breathe and let fresh air flow through.

Realising the existing structure of the old terrace couldn’t support the extension, the architects designed a simple steel portal frame system that could take the necessary loads and bring calmness through the sense of rhythm.

North Melbourne Terrace takes on a relatively simple material palette, using tactile materials such as dark stone and concrete while combining it with steel, glass and compressed sheet that gives lightness to the interior.
