A Builder’s Own Dark Post-war Cottage Is Transformed Into a Bright Minimalist House

Jesse Creasey, a Melbourne-based builder, and his wife found a Post-War cottage online, and when they drove past for a look, it wasn’t initially for him. However, when he inspected the inside and saw the level of detail, that’s when Jesse knew this was the house for them. The floor plan left a lot to be desired, though, with a rabbit-warren of rooms resulting in a dark and uninviting home.

Andrew Stapleton of DOOD Studio worked closely with Jesse to transform the home, bringing a minimalist style to the new part while maintaining the character and detailing of the existing. The original footprint and parts of the existing house was used as much as possible, but the whole house was shuffled around to address the north-facing courtyard, making for a lighter and brighter home.
