The Danish variety retailer has taken home yet another international design award. This time it is the “Fold” kitchen series that was awarded in what just may be the world’s most prestigious design contest – the Red Dot Design Award.

Flying Tiger Copenhagen wants to make good design accessible to everyone. That is why their Copenhagen design department has been designing many of the items in the more than 600 stores around the world for the last 10 years.

And it is not just Flying Tiger Copenhagen’s customers who like their design: In 2015, the “Tea Bird” teapot was awarded the iF Design Award and the Good Design Award, and in January 2016, the “Hi Haj” water bottle won the iF Design Award. Now it is the “Fold” kitchen series’ turn. “Fold” won the Red Dot Design Award, one of the world’s most prestigious design awards, in the product design category. 

“Fold” is the name of a series of practical and vibrant containers for food and beverages, or whatever else you might want to put in them. The series was designed by head of product design Lovorika Banovic, and it was inspired by Danish design traditions that go all the way back to Viking times. The jury chose “Fold”, for its colours and its unique and functional design, among other things

“Historically, Danish design was for ordinary people, and Flying Tiger Copenhagen wants that tradition to live on. We develop, design and sell products that are enjoyed all over the world. We design more than half our products ourselves and add to our selection all the time. It’s the combination of quirkiness and functional Danish design at affordable prices the sets us apart,” says Lovorika Banovic.

Harmonious folds

“Fold” comes in three colours: black, pastel pink and mint green. The award-winning part of the series consists of a one-litre jug and two half-litre containers. All of them are folded of pleated plastic, which makes them both strong and expressive. They’re designed for the kitchen and to fit into refrigerator doors, but they can be used them for other things too, of course.

Design from Viking days

The series is designed to function well for the entire family. The lids are easy to remove, and the jug is drip free. Even though there is no handle, the pleats make the jug easy to grip and strong, and they minimize water vibration. So children can pore without losing control.

Pleat is a French word, but the method has roots in Scandinavia. Lovorika Banovic explains:

“To pleat means to fold, and it’s a technique that’s been in use since the Vikings folded linen to make it stronger, for example. The pleats make for a design that’s both functional and beautiful and a soft form that also feels angular.” 

Red Dot Design Award

The Red Dot Design Award is awarded yearly. A panel of some of the world’s best designers judge products and design from manufacturers and designers worldwide. There are three winning categories: Product Design, Communication Design and Design Concept. Flying Tiger Copenhagen won in the Product Design category.

“Fold” will be in stores worldwide from July.
