The United States is getting older. Already at a record high, the number of Americans aged 65 and older is projected to increase by 50% between now and 2020, at a rate ten times higher than those aged 18 to 64. How will cities and suburbs manage this massive demographic shift, especially given that seniors overwhelmingly wish to “age in place?” The discussion will consider this question and survey the issues it raises for architecture, urban planning, and public health. Moderated by Daniel D’Oca (MUP ’02), Design Critic in Urban Planning and Design at Harvard GSD and urban planner at Interboro Partners, New York, with Deane Simpson, an Architect and Urbanist based at KADK in Denmark and Norway; Kathryn Lawler of the Atlanta Regional Commission; Matthias Hollwich of architecture and design firm HWKN, and Ann Bookman of Brandeis University.
