SUPRASTUDIO Winter 2015: ANIMATED CASTING – Team 2

TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR taught by JULIA KOERNER
Winter Term 2015 Greg Lynn Suprastudio – UCLA AUD IDEAS
Students: Ron Culver, Joseph Sarafian, Shobitha Jacob, Oscar Li, Qi Zhang
Project Title: FABRIC FORMS
Robot Lab Supervisor: Peter Vikar

This technology lecture researched into animated casting and the implementation of robotic motion within fabrication. The main constrain was the elaboration of a variable performative form. The term was divided in a three phase architectural design process: material research, simulation and digitally fabricated 3dimensional prototyping. The participants were utilising evaluation methods of material research and robotic animation tools. The fabrication was going through several iterations until a perfect seamless physical model of a 3 dimensional prototype was achieved. The ambition was to work with a fabrication technique uitilsing motion to create 3 dimensional space and components; and to use the robotics as a precision tool and time based tool and motion generator for variability between the individual prototypes.

Special thanks to Heather Roberge (UCLA AUD), Gabriel Fries-Briggs (UCLA AUD) and Peter Vikar (IDEAS) for sharing their experience with robotic and casting methodologies.
