On the occasion of the release of Nana Last’s book, Archive Matrix Assembly: The Photography of Thomas Struth, UVA presents a conversation and Q & A between Thomas Struth and Nana Last, moderated by Sheila Crane and Andrew Mondschein. Presenting the first theoretical analysis of contemporary German artist Thomas Struth’s entire oeuvre, Archive Matrix Assembly presents a unique understanding of the work as an evolutionary developmental system that advances through three stages: archive, matrix, assembly. Together the three stages distinguish both individual images and their formations into larger significant collections. With the artist’s images as the point of departure, the conversation will begin with a brief introduction to the book, and will develop though a series of questions posed to the author and the artist by the event’s moderators.
