Grahame Shane, Professor in Columbia GSAPP’s Urban Design Program speaks with Lay Bee Yap, who gave a lecture at the recent event “UD Sessions: The Expanded Field of Urban Design” featuring alumni of the Urban Design Program. Lay Bee Yap is the Director of Urban Design at the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the national land use planning and conservation authority of Singapore. Lay Bee leads her department in developing strategic plans, urban design policies and programs in the physical development of the country. She serves on a number of URA and inter-governmental committees that coordinate and implement national projects for urban rejuvenation, strategic development and infrastructure in Singapore. In this conversation she talks about learning from New York City, the importance of research in urban design and the Marina Bay project.
