Red Carpet In C



Please join Yunhee Min [Artist / UC Riverside Faculty] and Peter Tolkin [Partner, TOLO Architecture] on SCI-Arc Channel as they discuss and reflect upon the making of their immersive, site-specific installation “Red Carpet in C” at the Culver Center of the Arts in Riverside. Taking as their starting point Goethe’s notion of “architecture as frozen music” and the notational diagrams of composer Iannis Xenakis, Min and Tolkin highlight the relationship between music, art, and architecture in the dynamic forms and vibrant fields of color in their Red Carpet in C. Structural consultant Matt Melnyk [Founder, Nous Engineering / SCI-Arc Faculty] speaks about working with the duo to develop a method for producing a combination of large-scale catenary curves and parabolic shapes that would engender a vital sense of movement in the static space of the classical, Renaissance revival atrium.

Yunhee Min is a Los Angeles-based artist. Min received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA in 1991 and her Masters in Design Studies from Harvard University in 2008, with additional studies in 1994 at Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, Germany. She has had numerous solo exhibitions, including those at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects (2018, 2015, 2013, 2010, 2005, 2003), Ameringer McEnery Yohe, New York (2016), Equitable Vitrines, Los Angeles (2015), Exercise, Vancouver, BC (2012), LAXART, Los Angeles (2009), Amie and Tony James Gallery, Graduate Center, City University of New York (2008), and Pasadena Museum of California Art (2006), among many others. Min has participated in numerous group exhibition, including most recently those at LA Louver Gallery, Los Angeles (2018), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2016), Artists Curated Projects, Los Angeles (2015), Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Barbara (2015), and others.

Peter Tolkin is a founding principal of TOLO Architecture, a design practice focused on residential, retail / mixed-use, and arts-related projects. In his practice Tolkin advocates for the social and cultural agency of architecture, an approach informed by his prior work as a documentary photographer and his studies with American artists Allan Sekula and Lewis Baltz. Tolkin’s interest in the arts has led him to collaborate with a number of artists on installations including artists Yunhee Min and Charles Gaines. He has also worked on a number of self-generated art projects such as the inflatable installation Dunnage Ball and an accessible restroom design that addresses the politics of gender identity in architecture entitled XYYXXY. Tolkin first rose to prominence in 2002 when Architectural Record named him one of its ten emerging international “Design Vanguard” architects. Since then the firm has been recognized with numerous AIA awards, a James Beard Foundation award, and with publications in the national and international press including The New York Times, Architectural Record, Dwell, Domus, Abitare, and Interior Design. Tolkin received a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History from UC Santa Cruz, a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from California Institute of the Arts, and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University. Tolkin continues to practice photography as a complement to his architectural work.
