William.J.Mitchell – Smart Cities

Lecture date: 2005-11-03

Bill Mitchell looks at how urban spaces conduct complex flows of information through the 21st century city. He questions the necessity of skyscrapers in an age of corporate websites and reflects on such issues as cities as talent magnets, architectural bling, the new MoMA and recent work by the Smart Cities group at the MIT Media Laboratory. Projects by this group include Speakeasy, a community-based telephone service that connects multilingual volunteers, non-English speaking immigrants, and social service agencies; Athlete Car, a redefinition of a future performance vehicle and TxTMob, a text-message service developed for political activists engaged in direct action and mass mobilisations.

Bill Mitchell is Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and Head of the Program in Media Arts and Sciences at MIT.
