So the first thing you’re going to notice when opening up the new version is that the SketchUp Logo has been replaced by a new logo – now blue instead of red, with a different shape.
If you look closely at the logo, it contains both the letters SU and 3D. This isn’t really that surprising, as a rebrand to align with Trimble’s logo was bound to happen at some point. Notice that they’ve also changed the logos for Layout, the 3D Warehouse, the Extension Warehouse, and Style Builder.
Personally I’m sad to see the old logo go – it was a great representation of what SketchUp was supposed to be – simple and easy to model, but I’m not surprised that the change happened.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the new features. You can check all of these out at the 2021 release blog post on SketchUp’s website, which I’ve linked in the notes below.
First off, the biggest feature upgrade that’s been added in SketchUp 2021 is the improved tag management. This feature allows you to create folders to organize your tags. This is actually a feature that’s been long requested, as very long lists of tags has definitely been problematic in the past.
The way it works is that you simply create a folder by clicking the “Add Tag Folder” button, then you can drag tags into the folder. You can also move multiple tags at once by doing a shift click and dragging.
Note one cool thing about this feature is that you can also toggle everything in the folder on and off, or each individual tag on and off.
One thing to note about this – this does not replace organizing your model with the outliner. This really has nothing to do with the way geometry is grouped, but rather with the way visibilities are managed.
In addition, they’ve also added a search bar so that you can filter to find specific tags more easily.
Another feature that I’m excited to see develop further is the addition of the ability to edit live components directly inside of SketchUp. If you remember earlier this year we talked about the addition of Live Components to the 3D Warehouse. These components are objects that can re-draw themselves in real-time.
In previous versions, you could only draw the components in the 3D Warehouse and then download them. Now, you can download live components into SketchUp and edit them directly inside the SketchUp application.
We still can’t create our own live components yet, but being able to edit them inside of SketchUp itself is a great next step!
They’ve also released a new tool called Predesign – it appears to be a tool designed to help with doing energy and climate research for new project sites.
I’m interested to see if this tool gets any traction – I personally am not an architect, so I don’t know if this tool meets a specific need or not, but time will tell I suppose.
Final little changes – the .SKP file format has been rebuilt, which theoretically will result in file size reductions. I think the file type change is also designed to allow future changes as well, but I’m not privy to the nuts and bolts of a change like this one.
They’ve also added the ability to download updates directly inside of SketchUp, and for my Mac users, they’ve added a two-finger pan and pinch to zoom option inside of Layout.
