Assistant Professor of Architecture JT Bachman’s recent research explores the collection, reprocessing, and transformation of discarded materials into long-lasting objects and building material prototypes. His ongoing project titled Waste Not, Want Not serves as a first step toward a larger effort centered around the creative reimagining and repurposing of “waste.” He and his students recently collaborated with UVA’s Decarbonization Academy and JunkLabz to investigate plastic waste from laboratories on campus — developing processes for sorting, shredding, and reprocessing the plastic material into new products. Decarbonization Academy Fellows and Student Research Team: Isabel Hamilton, Matthew Rusten, and Zihan (Annie) Zhao. JunkLabz co-founders: Zach Landsman and Elly Zarzyski. With support from UVA Office of Sustainability.
