UD Sessions #1: Els Verbakel




Grahame Shane, Professor in Columbia GSAPP’s Urban Design Program speaks with Els Verbakel, who gave a lecture at the recent event “UD Sessions: The Expanded Field of Urban Design” featuring alumni of the Urban Design Program. Els Verbakel is founding partner of Derman Verbakel Architecture and the Head of the Graduate Program in Urban Design at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem. She directs the UNESCO Chair in Urban Design and Conservation Studies at Bezalel and she is the head of the Academic Committee for the Israel Urban Forum. Els obtained a PhD in Architecture at Princeton University, Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design at GSAPP, and a Masters in Civil Engineering and Architecture from the University of Leuven, Belgium. She published the books, In Search of the Public: Notes on the Contemporary American City (2013) and Constellations: Constructing Urban Design Practices, and guest edited a special issue of AD Magazine titled, “Cities of Dispersal” (2008). Grahame and Els talk about her experience in GSAPP’s Urban Design Program, her practice at Derman Verbakel Architecture and her teaching in Jerusalem.
