On an exposed mountain site outside Hobart, Eyrie House uses weight and lightness to create both shelter and outlook. Designed by Matt Williams Architect, the home nestles into the slope while a lightweight structure projects toward the view.
Located in Mount Rumney, the house responds to a steep site, strong winds, bright Tasmanian light and bushfire constraints. The design creates a sequence of enclosure and release, with a closed arrival, a vertical entry void, and a main living space that opens up across the landscape.
Concrete masonry forms the protective base of the home, softening the strong light while contributing thermal mass and calm. With expansive glazing from Rylock Windows & Doors, the outlook to Pittwater becomes central to the experience of the house, while the restrained palette of blockwork, concrete, glass and blackwood allows the surrounding landscape to take centre stage.
