“THE TOKYO TOILET,” A lecture by Koji Yanai and conversation with Rahul Mehrotra and Seng Kuan

Koji Yanai explores the process behind his ongoing project, THE TOKYO TOILET. Begun in 2020, the enterprise has gained international acclaim as it places convenient restroom facilities on public property throughout the city. After identifying the issue of accessible public toilets in Tokyo, Yanai collaborated with partner designers to fabricate creative and noticeable facilities that are accessible to all members of society. The highest standards of cleaning and maintenance lead to hospitable spaces at the forefront of innovation. Yanai will examine the sustainability of this initiative and the ways in which THE TOKYO TOILET inspires the integration of design and community pride into city streets.

Koji Yanai is Senior Executive Officer of the Fast Retailing Group, a position he has held since 2020, and a Director of the Board. He oversees sustainability communications for the Group as well as UNIQLO global marketing including sports. Yanai joined Fast Retailing in 2012 from Mitsubishi Corporation in Tokyo and focused his earlier years in providing support to Japanese retailers seeking to expand overseas. This led to a secondment a few years later to the company’s U.K. subsidiary. Koji Yanai graduated from the Faculty of International Commerce at Yokohama City University in Japan in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and began working for Mitsubishi Corporation the same year.
