The new Carillon d’Angélus Cellar

 The new Carillon d'Angélus Cellar

Saint-Magne-de-Castillon, France

Château Angélus has acquired a new winery finely designed by the architect Eric Castagnotto from the firm Architecte DPLG in Libourne, France. This cellar is used to make the second wine of Château Angélus, Carillon d’Angélus, as well as the latest arrival: Tempo d’Angélus. This new wine, signed by Château Angélus, will be introduced in Quebec for the first time in November 2021.

The balance between heritage & innovation
The old winery of Carillon d’Angélus – located on the estate – had become too cramped to accommodate new, more efficient and innovative equipment. Its location in a UNESCO World Heritage Site limited the possibilities of expansion and imposed strong architectural constraints. It was therefore decided to create a new winery from scratch.

The search for space to accommodate this new structure was carried out, but it was not possible to find the necessary surface area for its construction in Saint-Emilion. The spectrum was thus widened to the neighbouring communes and the choice stopped on a ground in Saint-Magne-de-Castillon.

The result of technical, environmental and aesthetic considerations, this new winery is resolutely modern and benefits from the best equipment.

The 4400 m2 building, located on a 3.30 hectare plot, is semi-buried with a green roof. It has a reception area for the grapes with optical sorting, a vat room for vinification, a cellar dedicated to malolactic fermentation and a cellar for maturing. Eventually, a bottling and labelling line will be added to this equipment.

The wine-making cellar with its 18 inverted truncated cone-shaped vats, inspired by the Fleur de Boüard in Lalande de Pomerol, with a hoist system and a vat lift, is 100% gravity fed.

A nitrogen production plant allows to protect the wines permanently and to control the oxygen as well during the vinification as during the ageing. Photovoltaic panels allow the self-production of part of the electricity necessary for the operation of this new structure.

Carillon d’Angélus, like the entire estate, is HVE3 certified. This highest level of “High Environmental Value” certification attests to the good practices of Angélus in terms of biodiversity, phytosanitary strategy and fertilization management. This building is certified BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method.), the British equivalent of HQE (High Environmental Quality). This winery was delivered in the 2019 harvest.

“BREEAM”

Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method – or building environmental performance assessment method is the most widespread building certification standard worldwide. Each type of building has its own assessment standard. The BREEAM assessment, simple and pragmatic, allows the calculation of the environmental performance of a building and gives its applicants the guarantee of respecting the environment from the design stage to the end of the building’s life. This certification therefore corresponds to a global environmental approach.

All these approaches also help develop a more creative spirit and a positive dynamic that improves the morale of the teams and has a direct impact on their productivity, health, comfort and well-being. The environmental aspects are put on the same level as the human aspects.

In constant evolution
Carillon d’Angélus is committed to an active R & D approach, from the vineyard to the winery, from viticultural techniques to the invention of new gestures.

The new winery of Carillon d’Angélus lends itself perfectly to the experimentation of numerous prototypes, from the electronic mustimeter to the grape washer… so many tests which, if they work, will be able to equip all the wineries in a few years, to improve the work of the teams and to sublimate the wines produced.

For the first time in Canada, Tempo d’Angélus will hit the shelves of the SAQ in the next few weeks. GALLEON, a fine wine import agency, is the exclusive importer of this wine and offers this vintage in Magnum or Jeroboam format on its online store.
