Faculty Josh Uhl leads the introductory workshop The Architectural Drawing—an introduction to architectural drawing with an emphasis on speculation and discovery in the drawing process. An architect’s drawings can be descriptive when they are generated to convey a particular set of formal relationships, and they can be analytic when they act as tools to investigate spatial potentials and adjacencies. In either case, the architectural drawing is the medium for our role as critical arbiters of the built environment. The significance of this role requires architects to interrogate the systems and patterns both visible and invisible that shape society. Through this research and speculation, drawing allows us to test these systems. Drawing empowers the architect to provide essential commentary and propose intervention for the world’s contemporary challenges.
