Construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel, a 25-kilometre-long sewer, has been completed below London to minimise pollution to the River Thames.
The structure is now fully connected to outflows of London’s existing Victorian sewer system at 21 points, diverting sewage spills away from the River Thames.
It is a vital upgrade to the city’s existing infrastructure, built 150 years ago to serve a population of four million – less than half the capital’s current size – leaving it overwhelmed and susceptible to spillages of human waste and rain runoff.
