Today’s SketchUp quick tip is designed to help you quickly swap one component for another.
Remember that in SketchUp, if you create a component, then create a copy of that component, when you change one version of that component, all the others change as well.
One of the benefits of this that many people don’t know about is the ability to swap components.
Here’s how it works. The tray has a section in it labeled components. This section will have information about all the different components in the model. You can see, this model, for example, has a cube, a sphere, and a rectangle in it.
If you select a component in your model, then right click on a different component and pick “Replace selected”, this will replace all currently selected component in your model with the new component.
This can be very valuable when dealing with high poly items in your model, because you can swap them out for a temporary low poly object until you need them, reducing time spent modeling.
Now for a fun example. I’ve created a model of the SketchUp logo out of cubes. What I’m going to do is swap them out for spheres. Note that when I do this, they retain their color because I painted them outside the components themselves (I wasn’t directly editing the components when I painted them).

In any case, thanks so much for watching, and I’ll catch you in the next video.
