Today we’re going to check out a SketchUp extension that allows you to drop objects onto a face. This can be especially useful for placing trees on terrain, as wall as other objects along irregular surfaces.
I’ve also created a brand new guide – the 20 Best Architecture Extensions for SketchUp that you can download at http://www.thesketchupessentials.com/architectureextensions that you can download today if you want to see the whole list right now 😊
DropGC is a free extension from the Smustard team that you can download from the SketchUp extension warehouse (the link is also contained inside the architecture extensions guide, or in the notes below).
One thing I like about this extension is that it’s really simple. All you do is draw your objects that you want to drop, select them, and press the DropGC button. The extension will then take these objects and drop them until they intersect with geometry inside your model.
A great application for this would be if you created a 2D plan, but wanted to also place objects on a 3D terrain.
Another thing to be aware of with this extension is that it will drop all objects that don’t have terrain or geometry underneath them, meaning if you try to drop an object with nothing under it, it simply won’t drop.
Just so you can be aware, it’s usually best to have the object origin placed at the bottom of the object, otherwise you can get some weird results.
