Claude Cormier is the 2017/18 Michael Hough / Ontario Association of Landscape Architects Visiting Critic at the Daniels Faculty.
As a landscape architect and urban designer, Claude Cormier is interested in urban public projects, for the people who live and love their city. In his creative process, he always brings history within projects, never as a mere copy, and without any nostalgia, he works with optimism and often uses humor to negotiate his way thru. Beauty is essential. It is not superficial. It creates positive environment. He wants to translate each unique situation into a bold and pleasurable design that will connect with people physically, sensually, and playfully.
Claude Cormier’s specialty is making landscape across controversies with always an attitude that everybody is winning something, and with a special sense of humor.

Claude Cormier has acquired a solid reputation as a prolific designer, noted for his originality and creativity. Working in tandem with teams of other urban design professionals, Claude has demonstrated an innovative, imaginative capacity for problem solving. He approaches each obstacle as a challenge, each new constraint as a stimulus for fresh creativity.
Claude Cormier studied History & Theory of Design at Harvard University, Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto and Agronomy at the University of Guelph. His firm Claude Cormier + Associés was established in Montreal in 1994. In 2010, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design organised an exclusive retrospective exhibition of the firm. In 2009, Cormier received the Knight of the Ordre National du Quebec, the province’s highest distinction for individuals who have contributed to the development and leadership of Quebec. Cormier was also selected as an Emerging Voice for North America by the Architectural League of New York in 2005, as well as one of 14 international designers advancing the design field by Fast Company magazine in 2007. Last year he was invited by Phaidon Press to be featured in a publication as one of the top 30 worldwide Landscape architects in the world. He recently received the Médaille de l’Université de Montréal, the UdeM’s highest distinction recognizing his exceptional career.
